The Filipino Muslims

Although Christianity is the predominant religion in the Philippines, Islam remains the oldest monotheistic religion established in this country. The number of Muslims who are presently practicing the religion accounts for only 5 to 10 percent of the nation’s total population. However, despite this low number, Filipino Muslims have always been a significant and colourful influence on the country’s unique and widely diverse culture. As a matter of fact, popular Filipino dances such as the Singkil and the colourful small boats called vintas are attributable to the Islamic traditions mostly prevalent in the southern part of the archipelago. In recent years, the Filipino Muslim community has begun to spread in the other parts of the country as well. No longer confined to the island of Mindanao, they now conduct their business in big cities like Manila and Cebu where they get to mingle with their countrymen of various faiths. This only shows that there can still be harmony despite great diversity in this fascinating Asian country.
