First Woman President

During the height of the infamous martial law years under dictator Ferdinand Marcos, the Philippines was engulfed in deep political turmoil and instability which came to shape the nation’s history. In all these, one woman stood out to bring justice to the assassination of her husband (who challenged the position of the dictator) and became the voice of the Filipino people. This woman was Corazon Aquino.

Mrs. Aquino joined the thousands who took to the streets of Manila to march in protest of the Marcos regime and to encourage the people to come out of their homes and do the same. She became the symbol of strength and courage to the Filipino people; the bearer of hope that one day, their nation will be freed from the long years of dictatorship at last.

Back when women rulers were not yet popular in this Asian nation, Corazon Aquino later became the first woman president of the Philippines after a landslide win in a national poll conducted in 1986.
